The Perth Mint located in Western Australia started minting the Australian Lunar Coins based mainly on the Chinese Lunar Year which is a very grand event in Australia. These Lunar Coins were manufactured from 1999 onwards and are available in both gold and silver. Since these coins are solely based on the Chinese Lunar year, a new gold and silver coin would be minted every 12 months in accordance with the animal that was representing the Chinese calendar that year. According to legend, these 12 animals are revered because they were visited by Lord Buddha.

All coins are minted by the Perth Mint in accordance with the rules laid down by the Australian government. The face side of this Lunar Coin depicts one of the following 12 animals; mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog or pig. The reverse side of the coin is inscribed with Queen Elizabeth’s portrait. However, since the Australian Lunar Coins were minted in 1999 and not in 1996, the first animal to be depicted on the face of the coin was the rabbit as it was the ruling Chinese Lunar animal during that year. The rest of the animals followed their respective order with the Australian Lunar Coin of 2010 scheduled to be imprinted with the tiger.

Each of the coins in the Australian Lunar Coins series is made from 99.99% pure gold with a very high polished design on a glossy backdrop. Each of the coins is struck more than once in the Perth Mint so that the face pictures of these animals are not destroyed easily by wear and tear. All the gold coins are available in denominations of AUS $5, AUS $15, AUS $25, AUS $50, AUS $100 and have a 0.9999 gold fineness which was one of the purest concentrations of gold in Australian bullion coins.
