The most famous gold bullion coin minted by the Perth Mint in Western Australia is the Australian Gold Nugget. All these coins are made from 24 karat gold and have different denominations of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg. The Australian Nuggets have a tender face value in Australia and just like the Australian Lunar Coins, these gold bullion coins also change their design every year. The fact they these coins are produced in limited mintage per year raises their numismatic value just like other gold bullion coins. Each of the coins has a gold composition of 99.99% making it one of the purest gold coins in Australian history.

Gold Corporation, a company owned by the Western Australian government, started manufacturing the gold nuggets in 1986. These gold nuggets had two very distinctive features viz. a frosted design effect and a very hard plastic encapsulation for each individual coin. These two features gave the Australian Nuggets a unique feature that distinguished them for other gold bullion coins produced at the time.

Ian Rank Broadely designed the obverse side of this coin which featured a profile view of the face of Queen Elizabeth II. Her portrait is surrounded by the words “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRAILA” and the denomination of the coin printed out in words. The reverse of the Australian Nugget originally depicted golden nuggets with different designs for different sizes. In 1989, this picture on the reverse was changed to that of a kangaroo because the kangaroo was considered to be a more recognizable animal of Australia. It is for this reason that these coins are called Australian “Nuggets” or sometimes even Australian “Kangaroos”.

The Australian Gold Nugget should not be mistaken for the Australian Lunar coin as both are minted by the Perth Mint and have a 0.9999 gold fineness, but the Nugget has a picture of the kangaroo while a Lunar coin uses images of different animals referring to the Chinese calendar.
