All types of precious metals such as gold or silver when taken as bulk are known as bullion. Such bullion metals are usually very rare and as a result, they become more valuable. Such valuable bullion metals are used to mint out precious coins which instead of being used as a method of exchange in day to day commerce, are stored as an investment by coin collectors. A bullion coin is defined by its purity and gold content rather than its actual face value.

There are many nations that have started minting such bullion coins such as America, Australia, France and China along with others. However, the most famous of all the bullion coins is the one that was minted in South African called the Krugerrand. Such bullion coins are not issued as legal tender because the value of the gold used to mint such coins keeps fluctuating day by day and so it tends to be much higher than the face value imprinted on the coin. For instance, although the Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin minted by the Royal Canadian Mint has a face value of $50, it is valued at $737 as bullion. It is not only gold bullion coins that are in demand, but even certain silver bullion coins such as the US Silver Eagles which have been almost impossible to obtain at reasonable rates because of the rising price of silver.

All types of bullion coins are available in gold and silver, the only exceptions being the Krugerrand and the Swiss Vreneli which are only available in gold. The American Eagle and the Canadian Maple Leaf are the only bullion coins that are available in gold, silver and also platinum. While most bullion coins are available in multiples of troy ounces, there are still a few that are produced in limited weights of kilograms.
