The American Buffalo is the name that is given to a 24-karat gold bullion coin created by the U.S. Mint and offered for sale on March 22, 2006. This coins contains 99.99% pure gold and has a legal face value of $50. When this coin was minted, it became the first pure gold coin to be minted for the public. Although its face value is merely $50, the proof value of this 24 karat American Buffalo Gold Coin is close to $900. This gold bullion coin is at times also referred to as the gold buffalo coin.

The obverse side of this American Buffalo Gold Coin is imprinted with the image of a native Red Indian male. At the base of this image is the mint date of the coin along with the words “LIBERTY” etched on the upper right crust of the coin. The reverse side depicts an American Bison or Buffalo, standing stationary. It is also believed that this bison is actually a resident of the New York Zoo. Just beneath the bison’s head, appears the official national motto of the United States of America viz. “IN GOD WE TRUST”. This motto has appeared on all coins minted by the U.S. mint from 1908 onwards. Across the top of the reverse side appear the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”.

The American Buffalo Gold Coin is available in $5, $10, $25, $50 denominations. The $50 coin has a troy ounce of 1oz. These American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins series became the first 24-karat gold coins of 0.9999 pure fineness ever minted by the United States Mint. All the coins in this series are struck at the U.S. Mint located at West Point, where every coin is struck twice with the dies so that it can get softly frosted and a high quality detailed image can be seen to float above the field.
