The American Gold Eagle is an official gold bullion coin of the United States. The United States Mint first authorized the release of these coins in 1986 to the general public. These minted bullion coins are guaranteed by the U.S. government to contain the stated gold weight in troy ounces of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz denominations as prescribed by the Act of 1985.

The face of this coin contains a full length design of Lady Liberty with a torch in her right hand and clutching an olive branch in her left. To the left of Lady Liberty, there is The Capitol building in the backdrop. The reverse of the coin, designed by sculptor Miley Busiek, depicts a male eagle carrying a branch of an olive tree hovering above a nest that contains a female eagle with her hatchlings.

In the summer of 2006, many uncirculated coins in gold, silver and platinum were added to the American Eagle Gold Coin series by the United States Mint. This allowed collectors to purchase these uncirculated coins directly from the U.S. Mint. Just like the proof Silver Eagle coins, the American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coins are of 1 oz. weight, while the gold and platinum American Eagle Uncirculated Coins range from one-tenth to 1 oz. in size.

These proof versions of the American Eagle Bullion Gold coins are mainly distributed by the U.S. Mint to collectors. Each of these proof coins has to undergo a very special minting process which includes manually inserting polished blank coins into special die rollers. Each of the coins is multi struck by the dies so that a soft frosted and high quality detailed image floats above the rest. Once these coins are minted, they are scrutinized by inspectors and then each of the American Eagle Proof series coins are sealed in protective plastic capsules.
