The Krugerrand is the most popular among all gold bullion coins. It is manufactured in South Africa and was first minted in 1967 to help popularize South African gold trading. The Krugerrand was produced by the South African Mint Company and was mainly minted so that it could be circulated as currency in American markets, as it was legal at the time for Americans to purchase gold bullion coins that were minted in foreign countries. This made is very unlike other bullion gold coins that were mainly minted for collectors and not for normal day-to-day commerce.

Another major difference between the Krugerrand and other gold bullion coins was that normal coins were imprinted with the fixed legal face value of the coin. This value tended to be greater than the bullion value of the gold used. However, the Krugerrand did not have any face value and so its legal tender was the bullion value of the gold at the current market prices. This led to it being the first gold coin to be minted without any legal tender value.

The Krugerrand is named so because its obverse side bears the profile picture of South African Republic President Paul Kruger. The reverse side of the Krugerrand is imprinted with the springbok, one of the national symbols of South Africa. The words “SOUTH AFRICA” along with the year of minting and gold content are also inscribed in English and Afrikaans.

Every Krugerrand gold coin is made from 22 karat 1 oz. gold and measures 32.7 millimeters in diameter, weighs 31.1035 grams and contains 91.67% pure gold fineness. Until the early 80’s, the Krugerrand had more than a 90% stake in the gold coin market. The success of the Krugerrand on the gold markets led to many other nations producing such gold bullion coins like Canada with its Canadian Gold Maple Leaf in 1979 or Australia with the Australian Gold Nugget of 1981 among others.
