The Philharmonic Gold Coin is one of the world’s foremost gold coins and is struck in Vienna, Austria by the Austrian Mint. These coins are minted in four different sizes viz. the one-ounce, the half-ounce, the quarter-ounce and the tenth-ounce. These coins were first struck in 1989 in Vienna and contrary to other gold bullion coins, are produced on a large scale. It is also the only bullion coin that is dominated by Euros. The Austrian Philharmonic coin is also the only gold coin to have been featured on the sides of an airplane – the Austrian Airlines Airbus A340.

The reverse of the coin depicts a variety of musical instruments including the world famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The obverse side of the coin is imprinted with the great organ located in the Golden Hall of Vienna’s concert hall. On the obverse side are also mentioned the face value of the coin in Austrian Schilling, the fineness, the weight and the minting date of the coin.

The Vienna Philharmonic coins are crafted from 24 karat pure gold and have a fineness of 0.9999 and have the largest diameter for a 1oz. gold coin in the world. The diameter of 37mm of this Philharmonic coin combined with it thickness of 2mm gives the coin dimensions which are almost the same as an old US silver dollar coin. This one ounce coin carries the face value of €100.

Today, there are state of the art facilities at the Austrian Mint which use very high tech processes to strike the coins. Each of the coins are stuck more than once by the dies so that the overall finish would be of a very high quality. In October 2004, in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of Europe’s only pure gold bullion coin, the Vienna Austrian Mint struck a massive 1,000 ounce Philharmonic Gold Coin which carried a face value of €100,000 with a weight of 68 pounds, affectionately called the ‘Big Phil.’
