The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is the official gold bullion coin of Canada which was first minted in 1979. This coin was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint and had a gold fineness of 0.999. After the popularity of the Krugerrand in the gold markets, the Maple Leaf was the next gold coin that hit the bullion markets. This coin was designed by Walter Ott and at the time it had one of the purest concentrations of gold in the world and did not contain any base materials. There were many denominations of the Maple Leaf ranging from 1/20 oz to 1 oz.

By introducing a new range of 99.99% pure gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins in November 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint became the first world mint to cast coins that had 0.9999 gold fineness. This gave the Maple Leaf instant world recognition and even today it remains one of the most sought out coins in the bullion markets. Because of the quantity of gold used in their construction, care has to be taken when handling such Maple Leaf coins as pure gold being especially soft can result in the Maple Leaf emblem on the coin easily getting worn out diminishing the resale value of the coin.

In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint made public a new 1 million Canadian dollar Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin which was 3cm thick, weighed 100kgs, had a diameter of 50cm and had a gold fineness of 0.99999. These attributes made this coin the purest gold coin in the world. The Royal Canadian Mint has also managed to reach an agreement with the International Olympic Committee which allows it to print Olympic Gold Maple Leaf coins which can then be distributed. This agreement will allow the Royal Canadian Mint to manufacture gold coins with the Maple Leaf logo as a testimony for the Vancouver winter Olympic Games 2010.
