All types of precious metals such as gold or silver when taken as bulk are known as bullion. Such bullion metals are usually very rare and as a result, they become more valuable. Such valuable bullion metals are used to mint out precious coins which instead of being used as a method of exchange in day to day commerce, are stored as an investment by coin collectors. A bullion coin is defined by its purity and gold content rather than its actual face value.

There are many nations that have started minting such bullion coins such as America, Australia, France and China along with others. However, the most famous of all the bullion coins is the one that was minted in South African called the Krugerrand. Such bullion coins are not issued as legal tender because the value of the gold used to mint such coins keeps fluctuating day by day and so it tends to be much higher than the face value imprinted on the coin. For instance, although the Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin minted by the Royal Canadian Mint has a face value of $50, it is valued at $737 as bullion. It is not only gold bullion coins that are in demand, but even certain silver bullion coins such as the US Silver Eagles which have been almost impossible to obtain at reasonable rates because of the rising price of silver.

All types of bullion coins are available in gold and silver, the only exceptions being the Krugerrand and the Swiss Vreneli which are only available in gold. The American Eagle and the Canadian Maple Leaf are the only bullion coins that are available in gold, silver and also platinum. While most bullion coins are available in multiples of troy ounces, there are still a few that are produced in limited weights of kilograms.

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is the official gold bullion coin of Canada which was first minted in 1979. This coin was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint and had a gold fineness of 0.999. After the popularity of the Krugerrand in the gold markets, the Maple Leaf was the next gold coin that hit the bullion markets. This coin was designed by Walter Ott and at the time it had one of the purest concentrations of gold in the world and did not contain any base materials. There were many denominations of the Maple Leaf ranging from 1/20 oz to 1 oz.

By introducing a new range of 99.99% pure gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins in November 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint became the first world mint to cast coins that had 0.9999 gold fineness. This gave the Maple Leaf instant world recognition and even today it remains one of the most sought out coins in the bullion markets. Because of the quantity of gold used in their construction, care has to be taken when handling such Maple Leaf coins as pure gold being especially soft can result in the Maple Leaf emblem on the coin easily getting worn out diminishing the resale value of the coin.

In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint made public a new 1 million Canadian dollar Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin which was 3cm thick, weighed 100kgs, had a diameter of 50cm and had a gold fineness of 0.99999. These attributes made this coin the purest gold coin in the world. The Royal Canadian Mint has also managed to reach an agreement with the International Olympic Committee which allows it to print Olympic Gold Maple Leaf coins which can then be distributed. This agreement will allow the Royal Canadian Mint to manufacture gold coins with the Maple Leaf logo as a testimony for the Vancouver winter Olympic Games 2010.

The UK Britannia is a type of gold bullion coin that has been in use since 1987 as competition to the South African Krugerrand. The Krugerrand had been gaining importance in bullion markets worldwide and so the Britannia was introduced to encash on this demand from these markets. This British coin has a face value of approximately £100 and contains approximately 1 troy ounce of gold. Since the reign of monarch Charles II, the goddess Britannia has always graced all British coins in various poses. These poses are used to depict the various changing facets of the island nation as well as her ancient origins.

The first Gold Britannias were issued in 1987. Since that year, four Britannia proof coin sets were issued every successive year. From 1990 onwards, there has been a drastic reduction in the mintage of these 4 coin sets. As a result, these coins have now become quite rare and are being preserved by collectors. Ten years after the minting of gold coins, in 1997 the royal Mint started production of silver Britannia coins that were available in 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce sizes.

Apart from the 1 oz. weight of the gold Britannia coins which has a diameter of 32.69mm, the other dimensions that these coins are available in are ½ oz., ¼ oz. and 1/10 oz.

In the 2008 variations of the UK gold bullion Britannia coins, the figure of Britannia is shown to be like an innocent maiden while at the same time made to appear like a warrior. The designer of this 2008 design was John Bergdahl who has managed to make Britannia appear at one with the sea and wind while at the same time casting her as elemental and essential.

UK Gold Sovereign coins were first minted in 1489 for Henry VII of England. These coins contained pure gold and had face values of only £1 or 20 shillings. However, these coins did not contain any imprint stating their value as they were considered official bullion. In 1604, the production of such Gold Sovereigns was stopped and replaced by Laurels although their minting was restarted again in 1817.

The gold sovereigns were made from 23 karat gold and had a half troy ounce or 96% pure gold content. The purity of these gold coins was reduced from 23 karats to 22 karats by King Henry VIII, which then went on to become the defining standard for all common gold bullion coins in both the U.S. and the UK. Today, the amount of gold content in these coins remains fixed at 7.322 grams or 0.2354.

There have been other denominations of these gold sovereign coins released by the British Royal Mint such as half sovereigns which have a face value of 10 shillings, double sovereigns which are worth £2 and quintuple sovereigns having a £5 value. These UK sovereigns were minted as normal bullion until 1982, after which they were only struck as proof coins for collectors. These gold coins are favored by collectors on account of their rarity as they have great numismatic value.

Before the First World War, UK Sovereigns were being produced in large quantities; however, after the war, British pounds were removed from the gold standard. It was only in 1957 that minting of such gold sovereign coins was started once again to prevent any attempts at counterfeiting. All these UK Gold Sovereign coins are marked with a nominal legal tender value, but the current bullion markets prices determine the actual value and price of the gold in the coins.

The Perth Mint located in Western Australia started minting the Australian Lunar Coins based mainly on the Chinese Lunar Year which is a very grand event in Australia. These Lunar Coins were manufactured from 1999 onwards and are available in both gold and silver. Since these coins are solely based on the Chinese Lunar year, a new gold and silver coin would be minted every 12 months in accordance with the animal that was representing the Chinese calendar that year. According to legend, these 12 animals are revered because they were visited by Lord Buddha.

All coins are minted by the Perth Mint in accordance with the rules laid down by the Australian government. The face side of this Lunar Coin depicts one of the following 12 animals; mouse, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog or pig. The reverse side of the coin is inscribed with Queen Elizabeth’s portrait. However, since the Australian Lunar Coins were minted in 1999 and not in 1996, the first animal to be depicted on the face of the coin was the rabbit as it was the ruling Chinese Lunar animal during that year. The rest of the animals followed their respective order with the Australian Lunar Coin of 2010 scheduled to be imprinted with the tiger.

Each of the coins in the Australian Lunar Coins series is made from 99.99% pure gold with a very high polished design on a glossy backdrop. Each of the coins is struck more than once in the Perth Mint so that the face pictures of these animals are not destroyed easily by wear and tear. All the gold coins are available in denominations of AUS $5, AUS $15, AUS $25, AUS $50, AUS $100 and have a 0.9999 gold fineness which was one of the purest concentrations of gold in Australian bullion coins.

The most famous gold bullion coin minted by the Perth Mint in Western Australia is the Australian Gold Nugget. All these coins are made from 24 karat gold and have different denominations of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg. The Australian Nuggets have a tender face value in Australia and just like the Australian Lunar Coins, these gold bullion coins also change their design every year. The fact they these coins are produced in limited mintage per year raises their numismatic value just like other gold bullion coins. Each of the coins has a gold composition of 99.99% making it one of the purest gold coins in Australian history.

Gold Corporation, a company owned by the Western Australian government, started manufacturing the gold nuggets in 1986. These gold nuggets had two very distinctive features viz. a frosted design effect and a very hard plastic encapsulation for each individual coin. These two features gave the Australian Nuggets a unique feature that distinguished them for other gold bullion coins produced at the time.

Ian Rank Broadely designed the obverse side of this coin which featured a profile view of the face of Queen Elizabeth II. Her portrait is surrounded by the words “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRAILA” and the denomination of the coin printed out in words. The reverse of the Australian Nugget originally depicted golden nuggets with different designs for different sizes. In 1989, this picture on the reverse was changed to that of a kangaroo because the kangaroo was considered to be a more recognizable animal of Australia. It is for this reason that these coins are called Australian “Nuggets” or sometimes even Australian “Kangaroos”.

The Australian Gold Nugget should not be mistaken for the Australian Lunar coin as both are minted by the Perth Mint and have a 0.9999 gold fineness, but the Nugget has a picture of the kangaroo while a Lunar coin uses images of different animals referring to the Chinese calendar.

One of the most popular collector’s coins all over the world is the Chinese Panda Gold Coin which was first released by the Chinese government in 1982. These Panda Gold Coins are legal tender coins which have been issued by the People’s Bank of China. Each of these coins is minted in an uncirculated condition and contain a 1 troy ounce of pure gold. The rarity of the Gold Pandas on account of their small mintage and high purity of 0.9999 gold fineness makes them appeal to both investors and collectors alike. Since their release, these gold coins are highly desired on account of their delightful designs that keep changing each year.

The design on the coin features China’s symbolic animal, the panda. The design of this panda keeps changing every year on all denominations and at one time there were seven different Panda imprints on the seven sizes of this gold coin, second in comparison only to the Australian Nugget which was minted in eight sizes. However, the 5- and 12-oz. sizes have been discontinued over a decade ago. The obverse side of the 2009 Gold Chinese Panda Coin features two small panda cubs sitting on a bamboo, enjoying a meal. These Chinese Gold Coins have denominations ranging from 1/20 oz. in size which has a face value of 25 Yuan to 1 oz. in size which has a face value of 500 Yuan. Many of the proof Chinese Panda Coins that are minted include the letter ‘P’ imprinted on the coin, although it is not imprinted on all such coins. Like most other European countries, France was also influenced by the production of various luxury coins that had a more superior finish and as such were mainly distributed among the wealthy class and not used as common currency. These ‘Monnaies de luxues’ coins as they were known were only specimen coins and not used for circulation. These coins were produced with very high quality finishes that made them better than some of the other proofs produced by other countries.

The first Franc Gold coin was struck in 1360 and depicted King John clad in armor astride a horse because of which it came to be known as franc à cheval. The franc was then dropped as the main currency of France before being reintroduced again during the 1795 revolution. During the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, there were many Gold French Coins that were produced which became popular with collectors. These coins bore the symbol of the Bonaparte Army along with the words ‘EMPIRE FRANCAIS’ imprinted along with the date of minting. These coins had different denominations of ₣5, ₣ 10, ₣ 20, ₣ 40, ₣ 50 and ₣ 100 with the ₣ 100 gold coins having a gold content of 0.9355. The percentage of gold purity in these coins ranged from 90.0% for the ₣5 to 92.0% purity for the ₣100 Monnaies de Luxe coins. Coins minted from 1899 to 1914 bore the dynamic image of the Gallic Rooster or Coq Gaulois, considered to be one of the French national symbols since the Middle Ages.

There are many French coins that are considered to be collector’s items even today on account of their rarity with the only exception being the French ₣20 “Roosters” which was widely available. The Gallic Rooster played an important role during the French Revolution and endured an image of confidence and pugnacity. This Rooster temporarily replaced the fleur-de-lis until Napoleon III reinstated it in the mid 1800’s. Other gold coins such as the Golden Angel of 1876 or the 1896 ₣20 coins are much scarcer.

Swiss currency has always held a place of pride in history right from the time the first Swiss gold coins struck in 1492 and were used as universal currency. One of the most dignified and well designed Swiss gold coins is the Swiss 20 Franc gold which was first struck in 1897. This Swiss 20 Franc Vreneli as it is popularly known has only added to the reputation of Switzerland being one of the most powerful and financially stable countries in the world. These coins are being treasured by both collectors and gold investors. While investors typically like to hoard such gold, collectors love to collect such coins for their timeless beauty.

The Swiss 20 Franc is a well crafted gold coin that displays the profile view of a Swiss woman who has braided hair and wears flowers around her neck in front of the Alps of Switzerland. The words “Helvetia” which are English words for this type of coin are located just above her head. The reverse side of the Swiss 20 Franc coin has the familiar Swiss shield placed on top of an olive branch which has been tied with ribbons. All Vreneli Swiss 20 Franc Gold coins were minted in the lone minting facility in Bern in 1879. These coins consist of 90% gold and measure 21mm across. In all, 29 pieces of this Vreneli Swiss coin were minted in that year with a small cross imprinted on the observe side in the center of the Swiss cross so as to distinguish these coins from others.

The Krugerrand is the most popular among all gold bullion coins. It is manufactured in South Africa and was first minted in 1967 to help popularize South African gold trading. The Krugerrand was produced by the South African Mint Company and was mainly minted so that it could be circulated as currency in American markets, as it was legal at the time for Americans to purchase gold bullion coins that were minted in foreign countries. This made is very unlike other bullion gold coins that were mainly minted for collectors and not for normal day-to-day commerce.

Another major difference between the Krugerrand and other gold bullion coins was that normal coins were imprinted with the fixed legal face value of the coin. This value tended to be greater than the bullion value of the gold used. However, the Krugerrand did not have any face value and so its legal tender was the bullion value of the gold at the current market prices. This led to it being the first gold coin to be minted without any legal tender value.

The Krugerrand is named so because its obverse side bears the profile picture of South African Republic President Paul Kruger. The reverse side of the Krugerrand is imprinted with the springbok, one of the national symbols of South Africa. The words “SOUTH AFRICA” along with the year of minting and gold content are also inscribed in English and Afrikaans.

Every Krugerrand gold coin is made from 22 karat 1 oz. gold and measures 32.7 millimeters in diameter, weighs 31.1035 grams and contains 91.67% pure gold fineness. Until the early 80’s, the Krugerrand had more than a 90% stake in the gold coin market. The success of the Krugerrand on the gold markets led to many other nations producing such gold bullion coins like Canada with its Canadian Gold Maple Leaf in 1979 or Australia with the Australian Gold Nugget of 1981 among others.
